Systems Admin Jobs In Highest Demand


Systems admin jobs are among the most in-demand technology positions available.

A recent report from Robert Half Technology found that more companies are planning to hire IT employees during Q2 of this year. In fact, 80 percent of companies are confident their IT departments will grow during the next three months.

About 9 percent of companies plan to make new hires while only 2 percent plan to make layoffs, resulting in a net hiring increase of 7 percent. That is higher than the 5 percent increase the IT industry saw last year and only one point lower than the forecast for Q1 2011.

"Companies are recognizing that moving ahead with formerly delayed upgrades and implementing new technologies can give them a competitive advantage," John Reed, executive director of Robert Half Technology, said in a statement. "Firms are investing in projects designed to create business efficiencies and help improve service levels and often need more IT personnel to support these initiatives, particularly if their teams have been understaffed in recent years."

As for what positions are in the highest demand, security and networking professionals - such as systems administrators - are at the top of the list, according to 13 percent of companies. Those are followed by applications development at 11 percent and help desk and technical support at 10 percent.

The skills in the highest demand include: network administration at 65 percent, Windows administration at 60 percent, desktop support at 57 percent, and database management at 52 percent.

Tech companies in the South Atlantic region are most optimistic about hiring, with 15 percent planning to hire more IT employees, and only 1 percent expecting to make layoffs. The report is based on telephone interviews with more than 1,400 chief information officers from companies throughout America that employ at least 100 workers. The interviews themselves were conducted by an independent research firm.
